“ONLY AN AGENT”
FINE FOR BOOKMAKING IN WAIPUKURAU. DAY’S TAKINGS “PHENOMENAL.” (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WAIPUKURAU, This Day. Leonard Beachen, sports dealer, of Waipukurau, was fined £-40 and costs 10s before Mr J. Miller, S.M., this morning in the Magistrate’s Court, on a charge of using his premises as a common gaming house. He pleaded guilty. The police stated that a raid was made on November 28 when it was found that 65 bets had been taken on the Auckland and Feilding meetings.
Detective-Sergeant H. Nuttall said: “It is quite obvious that he has an extensive telephone betting business and the bets would not indicate that he was in a small way.” Counsel for accused said his client was only an agent and the takings were phenominal on the day he was caught.
