THINKING IN TIME
MR CHAMBERLAIN’S ADVICE
TENDERED TO GERMAN STATESMEN. POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF CONFLICT. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day, 1.0 p.m.) RUGBY, December 15
The Prime Minister (Mr Chamberlain) in the course of a speech at a luncheon in the House of Commons, said: “We may take it that when German statesmen —I will not say the German people—reflect upon the possible consequences of conflict, if ever a conflict should arise between our two countries, they will think not only of our armaments, but our great financial resources, which in a war of long duration might well prove to be the deciding factor. It is this sense which is always with us, and which I am sure has a very great influence in preserving the peace of the world.”
Mr Chamberlain added: “We hear a lot about the alleged weaknesses of Britain, but it is noticeable that the great strength of Britain is hardly mentioned by those who make these allegations of weakness. The City of London is one of those great influences in the country which carry weight abroad.”
