THE BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY.

Til El IE should he a ready and sympathetic response' to the

appeal of the Masterton Beautifying Society for an increased membership and financial support which will enable it to carry on and extend the splendid working record already standing to its credit. Streets planted with trees and recreation areas improved and adorned bear witness to the enterprise and judgment with which the society has pursued its admirable aims, but much more in a similar category may yet be accomplished with great advantage to the town and its people. While it is promoting a carnival as one means of raising funds with which to finance tree-planting and other schemes, and wiil welcome donations, the society is anxious to secure the largest, possible membership. The amount of the annual subscription has bi?en made very modest, so that it is open to all who wish to do so to give the society their active support. Membership is open to people of all ages and may be expected to attract all who give serious thought to the merit and value of the work the society is doing. Amongst other things, an ingreased membership should go far to provide a remedy for troubles like that reported yesterday—the mutilation of the Brunns trees on the western side of the town. No doubt this vandalism is accounted for chiefiy by lack of thought. There should be no great difficulty in inducing even children to take pride and pleasure in the beauty of the trees and to help in protecting them from damage. With a full muster of both senior and junior members, the society will be. much assisted in spreading the right spirit abroad and in ensuring that the best possible results are obtained from its laudable efforts.
