THE MEDITERRANEAN

BRITAIN & THE STATUS QUO ATTITUDE IN EVENT OF ATTACK ON TUNIS. MATTER OF GRAVE CONCERN. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day, 10.50 a.m.) RUGBY, December 14. Mr Neville Chamberlain, in the House of Commons defined the Government’s attitude in regard to the effect of the Anglo-Italian Agreement in relation to the status quo in the Mediterranean, with particular reference to the position of Tunis, in the event of an attack. He said: “In view of Britain’s undertaking, to respect the status quo in the Mediterranean, as embodied in the Anglo-Italian Agreement, this certainly applies to Tunis. Any action which is contrary to the agreement would, of course, be a matter for grave concern to Britain. The Government cannot, however, contemplate the possibility of such an attack as is suggested in questions asked in this House.”
