WANGANUI V. WELLINGTON LOW SCORING GAME. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Low scoring marked the first day’s play in. the annual cricket match between the first elevens of Wellington College and Wanganui Collegiate School on the Wellington College ground yesterday. The wicket was on the soft side, and this no doubt accounted for the poor scoring. The weather was fine, but a north-westerly wind was strong enough to blow the bails off frequently. Wellington had first use of the wicket, but found the Wanganui bowling too good for them. The innings started at 10.15, and was all over in about an hour and a half for a total of 62, Cornish (19) and Bedingfield (10) being the only players to reach double figures.
Alexander, a right-hand fast-medium paced bowler, kept a good length in taking five wickets for 14 runs off eight overs. Reynolds and Sim, a pair of slow left-hand bowlers, also came out with good figures. The catching of the Wanganui fieldsmen was very good, and Marshall kept wickets well, Tiiswork with the gloves being smart and neat.
The Wanganui innings opened sensationally, Heays, the fast bowler of the Wellington team, clean bowling Reynolds, the Wanganui captain, with the ■acond ball of the first over. The feaure of the innings was a resolute mock for 55 by Mackie, who hit a 6 and ’even fours. He made some powerful :ff-drives and was also strong on the ,n side. Nairn made some neat leg strokes in scoring 18, and Arkwright shaped confidently for 17. The total reached 109. The Wanganui batsmen appeared unable to keep their pads out of the way, and four of them fell l.b.w. Ibbotson, Shallcrass, and Kemsley bowled well for Wellington, whose fielding was brilliant. The ground work was very clean, the returns forceful and accurate, and the backing-up good. Wellington did a little better in their ;econd innings, scoring 123. Rix-Trott ait boldly in scoring 47, which included a six and four fours. Shallcrass also played freely for his contribution of 26, and Bedingfield, the Wellington captain, batted soundly for 16. Al 1 the Wanganui bowlers tried, with the exception of Hockin, took wickets. Requiring 77 runs to win, Reynolds and Jefferd opened Wanganui’s second-, innings at 5.36 p.m. With eight runs on, Jefferd was snapped up in the slips by Clarke off Heays. Nairn and Reynolds then played out time, the score standing at 12 for one wicket.
