HUNTING PERMITS
POPULAR FRENCH SPORT.
More than a million and a half hunt permits have been issued in France this year. In Paris and the department of the Seine hunt permits total 12,000 and have increased by over a thousand as compared with last year. The popularity of hunting in all forms in France is due to variety. All game that is found in other countries can be hunted in France. In the mountains, the hunter can shoot chamois, isards, and wild fowl. In the forest areas ot France, which cover more than 25 million acres, big game is found in abundance, particularly deer and boars. Deer exist in certain forests of the cast of France, where they are protected The most important deer hunts take place in the forests of Senlis, Villers-Cotterets and Rambouillet.
In the plains and wooded country, game exists in plenty. The climate of the plains of France is particularly favourable for partridges. Pheasants, which hitherto were found only in a few regions, are making their appearance in other parts. They seek the marshlands, already rich in snipe and in teal and other wild duck.
Fox hunting is indulged in particularly at Pau, headquarters of the Pau hunt, one of the oldest hunts in France, which was founded by Englishmen pearly a century ago, and in its existence has only had two French masters of hounds.
