Our Summer Playgrounds.

B ESIDES being notable for the productivity of its broad areas of pastoral and agricultural land, the Wairarapa is exceptionally fortunate in the wide range of opportunity it offers to those who revel in the joys of life in the open, particularly during the summer season. Those whose delight is in climbing high mountains, and those who prefer instead to bathe or take their ease on sunny beaches, may equally satisfy their desires in the Wairarapa. So, too, may those who are attracted by the quiet charms of river and lake. The majestic Tararuas, with their fine beech forests, are a public playground and reserve, magnificent in character and extent, that people in almost any part of the world might envy. Much of the mountain territory may be penetrated easily and safely even by those who lay no claim to athletic prowess, though in an extended traverse of the range it is very necessary to enlist the guidance of the experienced bushman and mountaineer. Sport in great variety is to be enjoyed in many parts of the district. The rivers are well stocked with trout, and those who prefer the rougher appeal of sea fishing may while away the hours very happily at Castlepoint and elsewhere along the coast. Bathing, in river, lake or sea, also is in high favour during the long, warm days of summer. Lake Wairarapa and its companion Onoke Lake have their own important place on the list of the district’s summer playgrounds. Some mention must be made, too, of reasonably extensive facilities for various summer sports in both town? and rural areas, and of well-appointed camping-places for visiting motorists. A few of the district’s many beauty spots and pleasure resorts are described and pictured in these pages.

Charms of Mountain, Lake, River & Seabeach in the Wairarapa.
