HORSE FESTIVALS

A BRITTANY ATTRACTION. Brittany is the region' of France where horses are found in greatest number, and every year there are many horse festivals in addition to the well known horse fairs. The most important of these horse festivals is held at Loudeac, where this year 970 horsemen and 30 horsewomen took part. At Landerneau there were 500 norsemen, and at Carhaix, 200 horsemen. Riders at all of these horse festivals wore the national costumes of Brittany, and the sight as the cavalcades rode through the ancient towns, with their streets of gabled houses, was a magnificent one. The peasants who came from miles round also for the most part wore their native costumes, blue coats, orange waistcoats, broad-brimmed hats with black velvet ribbons hanging at the back, their womenfolk with white lace bonnets and silk shawls and aprons of rainbow hues.
