COUNTY AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MAURICEVILLE COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Mauriceville County Council was held yesterday. There were present Messrs E. W. Cheetham (chairman), D. Bennett, R. Judd. A. Forsberg, C. Welch and A. Gray. The treasurer reported t debit balance of £B6B and accounts were passed totalling £7BB 15s 9d. including progress payment of £3OO in respect of McKenzie's Bridge. The chairman was appointed to represent the council upon the proposed district committee to be formed un-, dor the Physical Welfare and Recreation Act.

It was decided that the 10 per cent penalty be added to all general rates remaining unpaid after February 8.

The New Zealand Standards Institute advised that standardised by-laws were being prepared to meet the requirements of all local bodies and requested to know how many copies thereof the council would be likely to take.

The question of the proposal to seal part of Highway No. 443 between the Railway Station and Dryer's Rock Road was considered. The clerk was directed to write to the Main Highways Board asking when the proposed ramp was likely to be constructed over the railway crossing north of the Mauriceville School, which should be done in conjunction with the proposed sealing. The clerk was directed to write to the Forestry Department pointing out that the cutting of firewood on the Forest Reserve at Mt Bruce was proving detrimental to the younger trees and the council considered that this cutting should be discontinued in order to protect the young bush. The overseer reported satisfactory progress on all work during the past month and prospective work was discussed and arranged for.

A special meeting was also held for the purpose of making a special order for raising a loan of £3OO towards the construction of McKenzie’s Bridge.
