Budgerigar as Back-seat Driver.
A dog leaning forward from the back seat of a motor-car is not an unusual sight in the city, and, if purely out of affection he gives the driver a lick on- the ear in between his sniffings at the exhilarating inrush of air from the open window, it is not remarkable. But the other day in Cathedral Square. Christchurch, the driver of a light car was seen to have a green budgerigar on his shoulder for a passenger. Whether the budgerigar knew that Safety Week had begun and had voluntarily offered his services as back-seat driver could not be known, but his feelings became obvious when the car was held up by the signal lights at the Bank of New Zealand corner. While the driver kept his eyes on the lights, the budgerigar hopped impatiently about on his shoulder, very annoyed at the delay, and he chirped in the driver’s ear until they moved on,
