FROZEN MEAT TRADE
LONDON QUOTATIONS. LAMB MARKET EASIER. Lamb market: Available stocks of old season’s now almost exhausted. Slow trade and heavy landings of Australian. Market slightly easier. Mutton market: Light weight wethers unchanged, others easier. Ewes steadier owing to better inquiry. Beef market: Frozen beef meeting with fair demand, but fores weaker. Chilled beef weaker, with slow trade. New Zealand porker pigs: Trade quiet, but prices steady. New Zealand baconer pigs: Nominal. Boneless bobby veal: Trade slow.
The above report was received yesterday by the Meat Board from its London office, which advises that the following are the ruling prices of wholesale quantities of the descriptions of frozen meat mentioned and are for representative parcels of the goods sold on Thursday. Chilled beef prices are averages of the week. All prices are on the basis of delivered to Smithfield Market. Prices for the previous week are shown in parentheses:—
New Zealand sheep: Crossbred wethers and/or maiden ewes, 481 b and under, 4 7-8 d (4 7-8 d); 491 b to 561 b, 4 l-8d (4Jd); 571 b to 641 b, 4 1-8 (4jd); 651 b to 721 b, 4 l-8d (4jd). Ewes, 481 b and under, 3d (3) 491 b to 561 b, 2?d tCJd) 57m io 641 b, 25-8 d (25-8 d 651 b to 721 b 23-8 d (23-8 d New Zealand lambs: Not quoted. Australian lambs: Victorian, first quality, 291 b to 361 b, 73d (73d); 371 b to 421 b, 7 l-8d (7}d).
Argentine lambs: First quality, 361 b and under, 7d (7d); 371 b to 421 b, 6 5-8 d (63d). 7 New Zealand frozen beef: Second quality, ox hinds, 1451 b to 2101 b, 4 l-8d (4 l-8d); ox fores, 1451 b to 2101 b, 3jd (3 3-8 d).

New Zealand porker pigs: First quality, 611 b to 801 b, 7£d (7Jd); 811 b to 1001 b, 7Jd (7 l-8d); 1011 b to 1201 b, 6 5-8 d (6 5-8 d). New Zealander baconer pigs: 1211 b to 1601 b, 6d (5 7-8 d). Boneless bobby veal: Ex store, in parcels, 4,‘d (4.1 d). New Zealand chilled beef: Ox hinds, 53d (5 7-8 d); ox fores, 3|d (3 5-8 d).
Australian chilled beef: Ox hinds, s}d (5 5-8 d); ox crops, 3jd (3 5-8 d).
South Africa chilled beef: Ox hinds, not quoted (6 l-8d); ox fores, not quoted (33d)Southern Rhodesian chilled beef: Ox hinds, sjd (5 7-8 d); ox fores, 3 3-8 d (3 3-8 d). Argentine chilled beef: Ox hinds, 6}d (6Jd); ox fores, 4d (43d). Uruguayan chilled beef: Ox hinds, 5 7-8 d (6 l-8d); ox fores, 3,3 d (4d). Messrs Levin and Co., Ltd., have received the following cable from their London agents, dated December 8, 1938. Frozen meat quotations (prices on a “delivered” basis, i.e., including storage charges, cartage, market tolls, etc): —Best North Island wether sheep under 481 b, 4 7-8 d per lb, 4856 4 l-Bd, 56/64 4 l-Bd, 64/72 4 l-8d per lb; North Island ewes, under 481bs, 3d per lb; 48/56’s 23d, 56/64’s 2 5-Bd, 64/72’s 23-8 d per lb. Compared with last week’s . quotations wethers under 481bs were l-8d per lb higher; 48/721bs l-8d per
lb lower; ewes 56/641bs l-8d per lb higher; others unchanged. There is a weakening tendency in the market
and the demand for New Zealand mutton is poor. Prices where changed are in buyers’ favour.
