PRESIDENT’S VISIT
SPECIAL TELEGRAPH FACILITIES NECESSARY. OTTAWA, ..Canada. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt of the United States visited Canada last summer to assist with the Premier, Mr W. L. Mackenzie King, of Canada, at the official opening of the new international bridge across the St Lawrence River, the telegraph companies had to make special preparations to accommodate the many reporters who accompanied the presidential party. Both at the bridgehead and at Queen’s University in nearby Kingston where the President addressed the students, telegraph wires had to oe laid down, m all 700 miles of special circuits were set up offering direct connection with seven key cities in Canada and the United States. Telegraph operators handled more than 35,000 words which were relayed to all parts of the two American continents and Europe, including London, Paris. Berlin, Rome and other capital cities.
