ELECTRICAL DISPLAY

THUNDERBOLT STRIKES RADIO AERIAL. HEAVY EXPLOSION NEAR HOUSE. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WESTPORT, December 8. In Miko, 25 miles north ofiWestport, last night a brilliant electrical display lighted all the countryside. It was accompanied by heavy thunder, and reached its peak at 12.45 a.m. when a thunderbolt fell —a ball of fire which, striking the radio aerial' of Mr R. B. Goulding, burst into countless fragments of fire a few feet from a bedroom window.

The bursting of the thunderbolt was accompanied by a terrific explosion like a cannon shot, and sent a rain of sparks all round. Upon investigating this morning, Mr Goulding. found that the aerial was cut off at each, end by the insulators as cleanly as if it had been done by a knife. Telephone and radio were both silenced.

A large hole appeared in a shed roof and numerous farm implements were strewn round, having been thrown over by the concussion of the explosion. Telegraph wires were also cut for a chain along the road. Inquiries from the neighbours revealed that they noted only the general electrical storm, suggesting that the intensity of the disturbance was located at Mr Goulding’s.
