THE PUMPKIN

REQUIRES PLENTY OF ROOM.

Pumpkins require more room than any of the other members of the Cucurbitous family; 12ft each way is not too much. Pick off any early solitary flowers for the sake of a more uniform crop later. Should the plants be inclined to run too much to vine, pinch them back to force lateral shoots to break; these lateral .shoots as a rule carry more fertile flowers than the main stem.

Pick the fruit when ripe, but when required for storing through the winter pick them when almost ripe, taking care not to injure the stem. Leave them in the sun to dry. The end of the stem will soon dry up, and the fruit can then be stored away in a dry. airy shed or cellar away from the frost.
