SMART CLOTHES

FOR INFORMAL OCCASIONS. I . For travelling choose a swing-back coat in a new beige lightweight material with a rough surface, yoked at the back to match the front, flaring from the shoulders. Suzanne Talbot is the creator of a hat which keeps curls and a high haircomb in place. It is a high pillbox of black suede, with cerise ostrich cloth forming a looped drape, which is caught by a jewelled hatpin at the nape of the neck. A slender formal evening gown is of Bianchini metallic brocade in gold on light blue, dark blue and light pink with a softly draped bodice pulled upwards into a halter neckline. The skirt at the back develops a fullness beneath the square decolletage.

Three little bows pulling up slight front drapes of the neckline, bodice, and waistline, form a smart trimming on a dark green silk crepe dress, which may be worn with a feathered turban with a roll edge of plaid velvet.

Hurroo for Ireland! A Thaarup sailor hat of black straw had a flowing veil, and on the crown, in front, an upstanding clover leaf of green suede.

The newest way to carry your evening bag is suspended around your neck, and Schiaparelli has designed a miniature one in turquoise and gold.

Royal Blue faille ribbon and a crown of the same ribbon fuchsia fashioned a Suzy turban. To make it even more interesting one end hung down over the shoulder.

Mainbocher designs evening : dresses that are starkly tailored, brightened only by a swift and striking flash of embroidery or colour, as in his tight black satin dress, draped high in front, and slit decisively to show a short red and green petticoat beneath.

The newest and most deliciously feminine of evening jackets are those that are quilted and padded like the jackets of a Chinese Princess. Wear one in white satin with a thick soft roll around the edges and sleeves.

A dressy Chanel coat in dark blue wool is printed all over with a design in gold metal.

Transform your zipper into a good lucktoken by fastening a solid-gold four-leafed clover on the tab to contrast with your black frock.
