FIRE IN CARTERTON

CAUSED BY LIGHTNING FLASH. SWITCHBOARD BLOWN OUT. After the last loud peal of thunder in Carterton about 9 o’clock this morning, the fire siren sounded a long call. The members of the brigade assembled smartly and were on the scene of the fire a few minutes after the alarm was given. The autbreak was at the residence of Mr Ellis, in Pembroke Street, where a flash of lightning blew out the electric switch board. The result was flames reached the ceiling of the room and filled it with smoke. Fortunately the room was of plaster board, which saved a conflagration, but the wall and ceiling were badly scorched. The inmates of the house received a bad shock and were very lucky that no serious damage was done.

P. Eastwood, 5 Perry Street, is Chief Agent for General Accident and Fire Assurance Corporation, Ltd. (Inc. in Scotland).*
