WELLINGTON WOOL SALE LATE RATES GENERALLY MAINTAINED. SUPER LINES SELL WELL. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The following is the official report on the Wellington wool sale issued by the Wellington Woolbrokers’ Association:—The first- sale of the 1938-39 season was held yesterday when catalogues totalling approximately 24,000 bales were offered to a full and representative bench of buyers. The bulk of the offering consisted of crossbreds from the Manawatu, Wairarapa and southern Hawke’s Bay districts, with a small percentage of halfbreds. Bidding was well spread and animated, with a good tone prevailing. The Wairarapa and southern Hawke’s Bay clips showed an improvement on last season, the bulk being generally sounder and fuller in staple, but the colour was rather disappointing, many clips showing dust. As an offset to last season, in these districts the average increased weight per head could be estimated at Ijlbs, and in some cases up to 21bs. Wool from the Manawatu and Rangitikei districts, on the contrary, showed little or no improvement.

Merinos and halfbreds were rather disappointing, competition for these wools being very restricted. The low prices ruling in Australia now are no doubt reacting on the market here, and prices for these wools show a decline of ljd to 2d as compared with our December sale last year.

Excellent competition was .forthcoming for super lines of crossbred, such lots realising exceptional prices, and as compared with the December sale' last year these super lots were at Id to lid up, and as compared with April sale appreciation was in evidence, the rise, no doubt, being accounted for by the"marked improvement in these particular wools. Average to good crossbreds, which comprised the bulk of the offering, did not show any noticeable appreciation and as compared with December last year they sold practically on the same level, but as compared with the last April sale they showed an appreciation of. ]d and occasionally a Id. Bellies and pieces showed very little change.
