CONSUMERS’ LEAGUE
SUGGESTED IN PALMERSTON NORTH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N„ December 7. “The consumer is the forgotten man; ,ve must make him the dictator of tonorrow,” declared Colonel S. J. E. Closey, urging the formation of a Do-minion-wide consumers' league to protect and champion the rights of the consumer of all goods and products at n meeting of the Manawatu Provincial Executive of the Farmers’ Union. He said it would be democratically organised, governed and directed, and its concern would be anxiety at the growing powers being built up by stronglyorganised bodies to raise and maintain their claims against the community in the form of prices and charges. It was felt that consumers’ interests were not recognised or defended as they should be. The league could also express opinions on the quality, price and method of marketing goods offered for sale. Colonel Closey’s proposal was enthusiastically received by the executive. which resolved that a consumers’ league was a national necessity and commended it to the sympathetic interest of the Farmers’ Union. A committee was set up to convene a preliminary meeting of city and rural interests in Palmerston North.
