BIG WEIGHT FOR THE BUZZER

(By

"The Cynic.")

The Buzzer, carrying the light impost of 7st 61b last season, including 61b overweight, won the Auckland Cup after a struggle with Knight of Australia, but he is not going to repeat the performance this year, judging by the penalty the handicapper has given him. Carrying Bst 31b, The Buzzer was beaten by the deciding stride in the New Zealand Cup by Arctic King, and for that bad luck he has to carry Bst 111 b, a rise of 81b. His share oi the stake money was £4OO, and for his third placing to Padishah and Sovereign Lady in the Metropolitan Handicap he earned another £lOO. Arctic King won the New Zealand Cup with Bst 11b, and has been raised to Bst 101 b, a rise of 91b for winning £l4OO. Throughout his career lie has been lucky where handicappers are concerned and it is still holding. Had Arctic King received his 91b penalty and The Buzzer 41b or 51b. the handicap would appear more equitable. In the New Zealand Cup The Buzzer had to give Arctic King 21b, and the margin has only been reduced 11b at Auckland.

Very evidently the handicapper holds the view that there is little between this pair, and on actual running is correct, but he has entirely lost sight of the fact that Arctic King rewarded his connections with £l4OO and The Buzzer his with only £5OO, garnered from two minor placings. Padishah heads the handicap with 9st, the result of his success in the mile and a Half Metropolitan Handicap, which brought in £7OO. In the New Zealand Cup he was fifth with Bst 61b,. thus has a rise of 81b, sharing the same fate as a non-winner in The Buzzer.

Willie Win, fourth in the New Zealand Cup with' Bst 121 b, has the same weight, but Argentic, which carried 9st at Riccarton'and failed to show up, has been dropped 31b to Bst 111 b. Wotan, a Melbourne Cup winner, which succeeded in the mile and a quarter Manchester Handicap at Feilding last Saturday, his first glimpse of form for some time, has been nicely treated with Bst 31b, a drop of 21b on his New Zealand Cup weight. At Riccarton he finished seventh, and looked then as if a' few races would work wonders in his condition. The handicapper evidently holds the view that his chance of winning another big distance handicap is a slender one, but the rating of this Siegfried gelding will give worry to the connections of other horses engaged. There is no question about Wotan’s ability to stay, and if he makes reasonable progress he should be among the favourite division on the day.

Malagigi, one of the big failures at Riccarton, ...has to, carry ....the same weight at Auckland, 7st 101 b, but Sly Fox, also a failure there, has been dropped from 7.st 101 b to 7st 31b, a substantial let-off compared with Malagigi. Sly Fox finished eleventh and Malagigi tenth. Tidewaiter, sixth at Riccarton under 7st 51b, has been dropped 41b, while Boomerang has also been let off with 41b less, bringing his weight from 7st 41b to 7st.

Obviously, the handicapper has thought little of New” Zealand Cup form when framing his weights, but there are so few distance races in the Dominion that if Riccarton form is to be treated so lightly it is difficult to see where a starting point can be obtained. .

Courtcraft will be a very interesting runner at Woodville on Saturday, especially as he has trained on very satisfactorily since Fred Davis took him in hand again after his long spell. Courtcraft will be having a pipe-opener for the w.f.a. events at the Auckland summer meeting and, all going well, he may contest the Wellington Cup next month.

Improved Maiden. Colonel Bogey, a greatly improved three-year-old by Nightmarch from that useful mare Kilmiss, has been doing good work at Awapuni recently and should not take much placing in the course of the next few weeks. He will make his debut at Woodville this weekend.

High-Priced Youngster. Millament, who was the top.-priced filly at the National Yearling Sales last January, has made steady progress since the Wellington meeting, at which she went a little bit shin-sore. She galloped smartly last week at Awapuni and a much-improved showing is expected from her at Woodville on Saturday. Cud Horses. More than usual interest will be taken in the Bolton Handicap at Woodville on Saturday owing to the presence of The Buzzer, who will be having his final trial for the Auckland Cup. Strangely enough this race has been a poor guide to the Auckland event for, in recent years Scion, Tanadees and The Buzzer (last year) all failed miserably only to improve to a remarkable degree over the longer distance. The Auckland Cup horses engaged this year are Padishah, The Buzzer, Arctic King. Tidewaiter, Wotan, and Happy Landing, and the presence of these horses will keep the backers busy puzzling out the situation.

Good-Looking z Colt. Duncannon, the best of the Inflations seen to date, is to make his debut at Woodville on Saturday and it would not surprise if this colt credited the Paper Money horse with his first winner at a very early date. Bred from the Kilbroney mare Kilcannon (Diogenes-Canyon), Duncannon has been galloping very attractively at Awapuni and he is making very steady progress.

Best at Nine Furlongs.

Pladie, who returned to his best form to win on the second day at Napier Park, continues to please Hastings critics and Harold Griffiths should have him thoroughly fit for the Woodville meeting. Pladie cannot be left out of calculations in the Bolton Handicap, but ten furlongs is just a little past his best

distance and he should find more friends on the second day of the meeting..

Gone On the Right Way.

Gay Son will set the sprinters a difficult task at Woodville on Saturday for it is reported that he has pleased in the steady work apportioned him since his brilliant success at Riccarton.

It seems a great pity that this Beau Pere colt was not entered for the Railway Handicap, but there should be some easy races for him during the holidays.
