FIRST WELLINGTON WOOL SALE

VALUES ON PAR WITH NAPIER.

TAKING ACCOUNT OF QUALITY.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day

Contrary to the usual practice, the Wellington wool sale, the first of the series here, did not begin promptly at nine, there being some uncertainty as to how export control would affect buyers, if they could not obtain licences for export. Assurances that they could export having been obtained, the sale ‘‘proceeded after some minutes' delay. A catalogue of nearly 24,000 bales was submitted to a full bench representing all countries. Considerable interest attached to the sale, as it was expected that prices would be as good as for the corresponding sale last year and equal to those at Napier, and so they were, having regard to the better quality of the wools offered at the Hawke’s Bay centre. Competition was exceedingly keen, but buyers were operating within rigid limits. Yorkshire strongly supported the sale, but the Continent, also was particularly active. Japan appeared to be an onlooker. New Zealand manufacturers were in the market for lambs' wool. Up to lunch time it was evident that some growers had ideas of values above those of buyers, but passings were not over frequent.

OFFERINGS IN LONDON HOME TRADE LESS ACTIVE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Received This Day, 11.45 a.m.) LONDON, December 6. At the wool sales, 6,555 bales were offered, including 3,516 from Nevz Zealand and 4.911 were sold. There was a poor selection, chiefly New Zealand wools. The Home trade demand was less active, owing to the wools being more suitable for Continental purposes. Withdrawals were frequent among slipes and inferior Merinos owing to low bids. Rates generally were maintained.

New Zealand greasy halfbred, Strathconian, brought lOjd to 12Jd; scoured Merino combing, Flock Hill, 18d; slipe crossbred, TB ’.rd S, B.Jd to 14Jd.
