FIREBLIGHT

EXTENSIVE /OUTBREAK.

POVERTY BAY ORCHARDS AFFECTED.

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, December 6.

Never in the history of Poverty Bay has fireblight infection been so extensive as at present. Affected trees are being found in almost every part of the district, including all portions of the borough. Mr P. Everett, orchard instructor, said that the disease appeared in most of the principal orchards, and in many hundreds, if not thousands, of domestic orchards in the area. Most of the infection to date spread through the blossoms, killing the clusters of young fruits, which turn brown or black and remain attached to the tree. Control of the disease presents a serious problem because of the vast area infected. The causative organism being a bacterial, it is not controlled in the least- by spraying and consequently cutting out and burning of all infected parts has to be resorted to.
