WORK OF THE FEDERATION. GROSS REALISATIONS £60,440. The operations of bobby calf pools associated with the New Zealand Cooperative Pig Marketing Association, Ltd., were reviewed at the annual meeting last week. Mr W. A. Phillips, chairman of the association, presided, and delegates were present from all parts of New Zealand. Messrs H. H. Innes and A. H. Honeyfield, of the Internal Marketing Department, were also present, and explained the procedure in connection with existing and contemplated regulations. .The report of .the National Federation of Co-operaiive Bobby Calf Pools for the year ended October 28, 1938, was read, and showed that the total bobby calf collections by the Federation for the season would exceed 230,000, which represented over 25 per cent of the total New Zealand killings'. This volume equalled over 7,000,0001bs on the hooks and 1800 tons of boned veal. Forty-eight pooled areas were gazetted. of which 26 were in the federation. Pool operations accounted for 66 per cent of the total collections in the areas. During the year 23 additional pools had been formed within the federation, while collections from non-pooled areas showed a substantial increase. Under the pooling system the number of condemned and dead calves for the season equalled 2.3 per cent. The average reduction in cartage and railway freights in pooled areas over that of non-pooled areas showed considerable savings. Over all pool calves the averagp proceeds at the works, including skins, veal and offal, on calves passed for export was over 9/I.ld per calf. In his address to suppliers’ representatives, Mi’ Phillips said the combined account of the association’s 26 pools in the federation showed that 4,284,8371bs of calves was handled, the proceeds totalling £60,440. From this gross figure, advance payments equalled £33,450; cartage costs £7031; railage costs £3575; agents’ trucking costs and field supervision £562; special payments £111; incidental expenses £604; administration costs £1510; a total of £46,846. The surplus left for distribution totalled £13,593. The conference closed with resolutions of appreciation to and confidence in the Pig Marketing Association for the efficient manner in which it as agent had discharged its responsibilities to the pools, special emphasis being laid on the satisfactory results obtained.
