Lawn Derby established a new record for a grass track by pacing one mile at New Brighton today in 2min 3sec. The previous best time for a grass course, was that of another Australian pacer, Happy Voyage, who registered 2min 4 l-ssec. on the New Brighton course and again at Epsom in 1923. A few weeks ago Nervie’s Last, who is also a free-legged pacer bred in the Commonwealth, covered a mile on the grass track at Epsom in 2min 4sec„ but the performance was not official. A strong north-easterly was blowing today, but the course was in excellent condition. Lawn Derby’s effort in the circumstances was better than the actual time indicated. He is now the holdei’ of the mile record for pacers on a dirt track in the Southern Hemisphere with lmin 59 2-ssec. to his credit. He is also the holder of the mile record for a grass course.

The official sectional times were: — ■Two furlongs, 31 3-5; half-mile, 1.1 3-5; six furlongs.' 1.33 2-5; mile, 2.3. On returning to the birdcage Lawn Derby was given a wonderful ovation, the big crowd fully recognising the merit of his performance. He was driven by his trainer W. J. O’Shea.
