ORDERS TO SHOOT
PUTTING DOWN TERRORISM IN RUMANIA IRON GUARD CHALLENGES GOVERNMENT. NUMBER OF ARMY OFFICERS DISMISSED. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. BUCHAREST, December 1. The following orders have been issued to police throughout the country: “To proceed with the greatest energy against all individuals committing acts of violence, to shoot down terrorists at sight and to maintain order at all costs. Policemen hesitating to shoot will be punished in accordance with the existing laws.” This follows the discovery of a plot by the Fascist Iron Guard to start a campaign of terrorism. Pamphlets addressed to King Carol were circulated in Bucharest yesterday stating that, as the Iron Guard had abandoned the hope of reaching a peaceful solution of their conflict with the Government they would adopt other measures. A number of army officers suspected of Fascist sympathies have been relieved of their posts, including General Antonescu, an ejc-War Minister, commanding the Third Army Corps. DEATH OF CODREANU CULMINATION OF PURGE. CONDUCTED BY POLITICAL POLICE. L. ; . (Received This Day, 10.55 a.m.) BUCHAREST, December 1. Iron Guards set fire to ten houses and workshops in Czernowitz. Two of the incendiaries were arrested. The Government organ “Rumania” indicates that the shooting of Codreanu was the culmination of a purge conducted by the political police throughout the country for several weeks —a painful operation necessary in view of the revival of terror by the former Iron Guards, which became a constant threat to public order.
