The Hon. F. Jones, Minister of Defence, returned to Wellington from Tauranga today. Mr W. P .Carter, formerly of Mauriceville, is at present on a business visit to Invercargill.. "The friends of Mr H. W. Dillon will regret to hear that he has had to enter the Masterton Hospital. The death occurred at Pahiatua yesterday of Mr Joseph Clarence Herrick, youngest son of Mrs Greenland and the late Mr George Edward Herrick. Mr Donald McKenzie, of “Woodlands,” had the misfortune yesterday to accidentally run a knife into his right leg. He is confined to his bed. A. Brown, the Grammar Old Boys and Auckland Rugby representative forward, left Auckland last night for Wellington, where he is to join the police force. Brown, who is one of the fastest forwards playing in New Zealand, has represented Auckland continuously since 1935.

The interment of the late Mrs S. Dawson took place at the Masterton Cemetery yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a representative attendance of mourners. Services at St. Matthew’s Church and at the graveside were conducted by the Rev. E. J. Rich.

There was a large attendance at the funeral in Masterton yesterday afternoon of the late Mr John Mannell. Father N. Moore conducted a service in St. Patrick’s Church and officiated at the graveside. Many very beautiful wreaths were in evidence. The pallbearers were Messrs G. Selby, E. B. Ash, F. Goggin, R. Goggin, J. A. Russell and C. G. Kendrick. Constable L. C. Le Comte, of Pahiatua, and formerly of Masterton, was taken suddenly ill at his home on Wednesday. Severe internal haemorrhage occurred and Dr. Watson’s services were called in. Subsequent to the doctor’s visit a severe heart attack supervened, and treatment with ice-packs was applied up till a late hour on Wednesday night, when the patient rallied. Considerable care however, will be necessary for some time to come, and it will be many weeks before Mr Le Comte is about again. One of the brightest and most cheerful homes in Dunedin yesterday was that of Mr and Mrs John Coombs. North East Valley. They were celebrating the 68th anniversary of their wedding and the occasion was made particularly happy by their own physical and mental alertness. Mrs Coombs is in her 93rd year and Mr Coombs was 89 last month, and the sprightliness of both would be a credit to any wife and husband 25 or 30 years younger. Mr Coombs, who was born in Kent, arrived in New Zealand in 1865, coming out with his mother and other members of the family to join his father, who had come out some five years earlier. The girl, who was later to become his wife, was by that time well settled in Otago, her family having come out to Port Chalmers in 1849. She has, therefore, watched the development of Otago and New Zealand through 89 years. Mr Coombs was 2’ years old when he and the 24-year-old Miss Boyes were married in First Church. Their marriage ceremony was the last conducted by the Rev. Dr. Thomas Burns, the first Presbyterian minister in Otago,
