CARE OF THE LAWN

A USEFUL HINT. There is still time to renovate lawns that are “patchy.” In the case of new lawns in which germination has been uneven, mix together as much seed and sifted soil as will cover the bare places lightly. Then soak an old sack in water, place it on the floor of a shed and spread the mixture on it. If kept damp the seeds will commence to germinate in five of six days. The mixture may then be scattered thinly on the bare places, patting it lightly with the back of a spade. By this method the risk of birds takihg the seed is greatly reduced. 4 When the young grass has taken root scatter a light dressing of sifted soil over the whole of the lawn; indeed, in the early life of a lawn, topdressings cannot be given too frequently.
