BOBBY CALVES

ACTIVITIES OF S.P.C.A. The annual report of the Wellington Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals states, with reference to the bobby calf trade: “Your inspector, acting under instiuctions from the Federation, has been closely watching the transport and handling of bobby calves in the Wellington Province. As far as the Wellington Province is concerned the inspector is pleased to say that the facilities, both by road and rail, have improved considerably. This is due to a certain extent to the method of zoning of areas brought into force by the Department of Agriculture. It is hoped by next season that the zoning regulations will be in force throughout the Dominion.. Much could still be done by farmers to improve conditions of the bobby calf trade, if they would only incur the small expense of erecting rough sheds with wooden floors to house the calves whilst waiting for the carriers.”
