MONA’S SONG IN PUBLIC FAVOUR

(By

“The Cynic.”)

Mona’s Song, who ran second on Saturday to Archchoille in the Southland Cup, started 16 times last summer and won four times and was placed in eight other races. Her first win came in her eighth start, a win in a Novice Stakes at Winton, Western Song gave her 201 b. and a beating over six furlongs on the second day of the same meeting. At Gore she was third to Valmarch 9.6 and Peony Rose 8.11 with 7.2 over six furlongs. On the second day of the meeting Mona’s Song 7.3 beat Spanish Lad 7.8 and Nightwings 8.0 over seven furlongs in lmin. 27 1-5 secs. At the Birchwood Hunt meeting Mona’s Song 7.11 won over seven furlongs in lmin 27sec. At Riverton she won with 8.11 in lmin 15sec. In the Southern Hack Handicap Norseman 8.10 won from Coxcomb 7.24 and Mona’s Song 8.9 in lmin 40sec, and in the Farewell Handicap Rodeur 8.9, Moneyless 8.5, and Mona’s Song 7.0 were separated by a head and half a head at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 26 3-ssec. In her final appearance for the season Mona’s Song 7.0 was fourth to Peony Rose 7.2, Rodeur 9.1 and Sea Fox 7.3 over seven furlongs in lmin 29sec on a soft track. This season Mona’s Song Won at Gore over a mile with 8.8 in lmin 43sec from Lord Nuffield 8.12, Master Dingle 7.7 and four others. On the second day she was unplaced with 7.3 behind Ballard 7.6, Valantua 8.5, and’ Rodeur 8.6. Mona’s Seng has been training on and doing good track work, but nevertheless had her full share of weight in the Southland Cup, She made amends for failing to head Archdoille in the Cup by winning the last race (over a mile against 1 ; | miles in the cup.) Not at his Best. Among those whom Play On defeated at Levin on Saturday was Cricket, who won a high-weight event at Masterton last month and ran second in a similar event on the concluding day. Cricket ran a good race for over a mile and a-half in the New Zealand Cup, but in two subsequent races of a mile at that meeting, ’ he failed to gain a place, although he was well fancied for the Epsom Handicap. He has not had much time to freshen but he should be hard to beat when he can be produced at his best, which, apparently, is not yet. Muscular and Impressive. Beaupartir was a handsome colt before he went down for the N.Z. Cup meeting, but those races he had there have worked a wonderful difference in his condition and he is. now more muscular and impressive. It is probable that the Awapuni colt will have only one race, Ihe King’s Plate, before he lines up against Defaulter in the Northern Derby, but that race should be sufficient to bring him up to his best, and his connections arc confident that Beaupartir will give the southerner another great struggle.' Play On in Form. Play On, who won the chief event at Levin on Saturday, will be remembered as the winner of the Hauraki Plate at the Takapuna Jockey Club’s meeting last January, and although he has not been proved as a stayer, '.he Levin track seemed to suit him for he won comfortably. He is now just about at the top cf his form. Mazir Scores. Unlucky in the .Mitchelson Cup Mazir won impressively on the second day of the Auckland Spring meeting with 8.9 and had not raced until he went cut favourite in the Waikato Cup on Saturday. He found the pace too hot and finished out of a place. In the chief event at Hamilton yesterday Mazir shewed better fbrm by winning from the favourite Valamite by a length and a half. This well-bred young horse is susceptible to still further improvement and should run a great race when he strikes form. ’ Manolive in the Money. Manolive, who won the Eclipse Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday and who set a new record for a mile and a-quar-ter at 2min 2sec, was got by Manfred from Sister Olive, by Red Dennis — Jubilee Queen, by Pcsitanc from Tragedy Queen, the dam cf Comedy King.

Nuffield Hopes. The cloudy outlook for the Australian turf is not confined to the weight-for-age sphere. In the last year, not one really brilliant miler has arisen to displace the old-stagers who have ruled the roost for years. And the staying position is no belter. Nuffield is the one hope. Jack Holt must have had great faith in him to have expressed an opinion that Nuffield was a better horse than Hall Mark. But there is an “if” attached to Nuffield. His two mishaps during the spring racing were not encouraging, and before he can clinch his claim to fame he must stand up properly to his work.

Auckland Re-handicaps. Rehandicaps for the Auckland Racing Club’s second spring meeting are: Cambria Handicap.—Foxmond, 101 b, making 8.5. Alison Cup.—Jonathan. 41b, making 8.9; Birthday Boy. 11b. making 7.4. Ponui Handicap.—High Sea, 171 b, making 8.10. Cheltenham Handicap.—Far Land, 91b, making 8.0. Milford Handicap.—Royal Vaals, 101 b, making 9.10.

Royal Doulton Dead. The former good performer. Royal Doulton, is dead. Among her many successes were The Ohinemuri Cup and ihe Dargaville Cup, each twice, the Auckland Racing Club’s Summer Cup, the St Andrew’s Handicap and the Takapuna Jockey Club Handicap. The proprietors of the Royal Doulton potteries in England, after her success in the Summer Cup in Auckland, presented her owners, the Messrs Roulston, and her trainer. W. Townsend, with replicas of the mare in Royal Doulton ware. The only progeny of the mare to race is Royal Vaals, who won the final event at ihe Waikato meeting on Saturday, and again yesterday. She had a yearling' colt by Bronze Eagle.

A Catalogue Story. Here is the latest story about Catalogue, the winner of the Melbourne Cup:—At the Goodwood meeting in Western Australia on Cup Day a 5s totalisator v/as opened on the Melbourne Cup, and only one ticket was issued for Catalogue This returned his lucky backei' £53 12s, odds of approximately 213 to 1. Not a single Ticket was issued for the winner in the Lcger reserve, so the supporters of other horses were returned 4s for each 5s invested. The man who backed Catalogue in ihe grandstand enclosure did so because of a dream, and he is reported to have supported the gelding for £9OO with bookmakers on the morning of the race. >

A Lucky Lady.

A half-share in the ticket that drew Catalogue in the £50,000 sweep on the Cup was held by Miss Wylie Daniel, who is over 70 years of age. She lives at Newtown, near Ballarat. Subsequent to hearing of her good luck, Miss Daniel declined to see anyone. She will be fortunate if she can hold off the number who will have business propositions to assist her mvesting that £25,000 —to their advantage.
