PHAR LAP EXHIBITS "MELBOURNE GOT THE BETTER OF THE DEAL." "I think a mistake was made in separating the skin of Phar Lap from its skeleton,” said Mr M. Marks, who recently returned from Australia, when referring yesterday to the Dominion Museum exhibit. "I’ll tell you why. I visited the Melbourne museum several times and saw the wonderful job the taxidermists have made of the setting up of Phar Lap, one of greatest racehorses the world has known. It is a real job. You would think for the moment that the horse itself was standing there. Then alongside Phar Lap stands the skeleton of Carbine, another champion racehorse • bred in New Zealand.
"Now, to my mind, skeletons alwayslook ugly. You can’t make them look otherwise, except perhaps to anatomi--cal scientists, and beyond a cursory glance do not take much interest. in them. I watched the people in the Melbourne museum to get their reactions, and I don’t think I am exaggerating when I say that they looked at the skin of Phar Lap ten times as long as they looked at the skeleton of Carbine. For that reason I hold that it was a mistake to separate these two. Either both should have been in Melbourne or in Wellington. I suppose there will be a little interest in the skeleton of Phar Lap to begin with, because he was such a big horse; but after a time few people will want to look at these old and unadorned bones. I think Melbourne got the better of the deal, for the stuffed skin looks lifelike.”
