TRACK CYCLING

NOTES ON RECENT EVENTS. (By “Sitter-in.”) Last Wednesday’s two cycle races provided the large crowd at the Park with the best exhibition of cycling seen at an evening run for at least three years. Both the J mile and the mile events resulted in close finishes, and spectators can thus look forward to thrilling races throughout the present season. Keith Woollett, who scooped the pool during the last road season, has shown that he will be a hard man to beat on the track. He rode off the same mark as Russell Copp and narrowly won both events from him. Jack McAliece was third in the half mile final, after winning his heat requires only experience before winning races. If Charlie Dykes puts in the same energy in pushing his cycle as he does in pushing his pen as Secretary of the Wairarapa Club he will go further in the sport. Cecil .Osborne found the handicaps rather severe but this hardy veteran of Masterton cycling now commencing his fifteenth track season, should soon be in a place. M. Graham, L. Green and R. Killington found the going hard but will improve with further training and experience. Next week will mark the first appearance of Jack Duckett and Jack Brader who will add strong competition if their road racing form is any, indication of their abilities. The writer witnessed several of the road races during the past season and cannot understand why riders of undoubted ability such as Bill Gay, Bernie Dooling, Geoff Swain, Ray Green and the Carterton star, Oscar Morris, have not been seen in action on the Oval, as track cycling develops the necessary sprint for road cycling.

Next week’s events will be another J mile handicap and also a 2 mile race. These should provide good fare for cycling enthusiasts. Mr A. O’Donnell will declare the handicaps on the ground.
