BARAN MAY ATTAIN TOP GLASS
(By
“The Cynic.”)
Fields have been large in most of the two-year-olds races that have been decided in the Dominion this season. This is the usual experience in the spring. Many trainers set out hopefully for the, early events, but, however optimistic they may be as the result of track gallops, racing provides the real test. It is quite common to have large fields in the initial races for two-year-olds, but by the close of the Riccarton carnival enough has been seen to enable the juveniles to be classified. From now on fields in two-year-old races will not be so large. Some, of the youngsters that were seen at Riccarton will do better later in the season, but not many of them need be considered seriously when the best class is under discussion. Beaulivre, with two wins before he same south, did not enhance his reputation, though he showed, brilliant speed in the Welcome Stakes, his only start. There was a disposition to blame the rider for his defeat by Winning Rival, but the good-looking Beau Pere colt was stopping badly at the end of the race. He was not knocked about in his gallops before the meeting, so it will be as well to give him further chances, though it is worth remembering that in his important races later on he-will have to run longer journeys.
Winning Rival was not seen again after her success in the Welcome Stakes at the Dunedin meeting last month, she failed badly in two races at Trentham, so the Riccarton success was a surprise. She seems unable to hold her place with the smart beginners in the early part of her races, but in all her starts her finishing run has suggested stamina, so she.should be benefited by the longer journeys. There must be interest if she and Beaulivre clash again in the Foal Stakes at Ellerslie. Winning Rival has helped to build up an early reputation for the young sire, Bulandshar, and this Blandford horse may prove to be a great find for the Dominion. Baran, also by Bulandshar, won two races, and he may be on the way to top class. He is a big, undeveloped colt, already blessed with an abundance of speed, and his win on the final day was an impressive performance. tt is hard to estimate how much he as he gains experience. Great Swoop, the other winner, is a useful galloper, likely to improve as the season advances, but not quite enough to be on of the tops. He is a well-grown chestnut, by Magnus (now dead), and the colt has an in-1 heritance of grey hairs from The Tetrarch, his grandsire.
Though beaten into second place in his only start at the meeting ( Daniel Defoe may turn out one of the best of the youngsters that raced at Riccarton. He is a big fellow, with an abundance of speed and scope for development. Provided he trains oh, he should be a grand horse later on. Of the beaten lot, Nora Gregor shaped best.' She has speed, and will continue to win handicaps. The Southlander, Dark Flight, a half-brother to Ortyx, is exceptionally brilliant, but lacks stamina, and for that reason Gold Salute appeals more, as he sticks on. Mondello is another from the south that should improve, while Moneymore can go fast.
Master Hotspur failed badly on the first day, and, though he showed speed in his other appearance, his performance did not please, as he shut up too quickly when challenged. Scandal, a good-looking Bulandshar’ colt, was narrowly beaten in his only start. He is not being over-raced, and he may be a very good half-brother to the three-year-old, Beaupartir. J. M. Olive started three, and, though they did not reach the money, they raced well enough to suggest better deeds later on. They were Moorsotis, by Mypsotis; Bere Regis, by Lord Warden; and Iceland Spar, by Excitement. To these must be added President Prince, a Lord Quex gelding that has been transferred to the stable since he showed promising form at the meeting. Olive will thus have four juveniles to hand over to his employer, F. D. Jones, when he returns next week, all of them in great order. Benevolent, a well-grown Beau Pere colt, ran well enough to suggest big things later on, but he will be given time to develop. My Abbey shows promise, while the best of Scold may not be seen till next, season, as she comes from a family that improves with age. Cape Garbo. The penalty for poor form bn the flat usually means a hurdling or steeplechasing career and Gape Garbo is to start off hurdling shortly. There is ho doubt that this six-year-old Cape Horn-Missmaid gelding has ability, but he is a hard horse to ride to advantage, as his connections well know. It is a difficult task to get a lightweight jockey capable of making him give of his best and now that he is in open company his chances of success on the flat have become slender. Last season he won only one race and so far this season has one victory to his credit, a surprise win in the Islington Handicap at Riccarton in August. With a hurdle rider in the saddle he may be induced to show" better form—and that is the hope of his trainer, E. C. Parker.
My Abbey, a two-yeaf-old bay filly by Myosotis from Some Abbey, in Parker’s stable, is suffering from kidney trouble and after being treated she will be given a spell. Prior to the New Zealand Cup meeting, My Abbey had shown some promise, in work, but in her first race at the meeting, the Irwell Handicap, she was hafdly in condition to do herself justice and ran accordingly.
Disappointed. . , Waka shaped at Trentham as though . he would be a “good thing” for a race at Riccarton, but he let a large number of suppbftefs down when beaten into third place in the Middleton Handicap . on the sfecohd day. Wdka has lightened up a bit arid as he evidently races to best advantage on a soft track not I much is likely to be required of him, for sbme time. [- A Novice. I J. B. Pearson has been devoting a good deal of attentidn to Shanghai i Lily, a thrrie'-year-old filly by Lord Warden fforii Malrnsey, the darri of Wine Card. She shows a lot of proiriise in her work-, and she only needs to train on to be useful, as she is a smart galloper. Patient Treatments Mr R. Adamson hopes to have Rotokino ready to resume racing at the West Coast holiday circuit. This Robespierre gelding, who has been a source of some anxiety to his owner-trainer, is carrying a lot of condition at present, but if he remains sound he should fine down a bit iri the next few weeks. He has been handled very patiently, and he may be on the way to making early amends. Taiboe. The Pink Coat—Jarretiere gelding Tarboe was sold under the hammer at the Christchurch sales at six guineas. Tarboe showed promise, but failed to stand training. “Street Betting.” On charges of using a Sydney ferry for “street-betting,” two men were recently fined £2O each. The defence contended that a vessel could riot be termed a street. A Good Pool. The totalisator investments on the • Melbourne Cup amounted to £35,769, - or £297 15s more than last year. The amount handled during the day was £121,050, a decrease of £24,667 10s on last year’s figures. A Cupbearer Colt. One of the most attractive-looking * foals this season is a chestnut colt by Lord Byron from Cupbearer, by 1 Tea Tray—Dancing Doll, by Black * Jester —My Dolly, by Sundridge. Lord ' Byron was got by Iliad from Entres ’ Nous, the dam of Guarantee. The foal 1 is owned by Mr J. M. Samson. Lord f Byron was injured as a yearling, and 1 in consequence could not be serious- 1 ly trained, but if he leaves such stock t as the Cupbearer colt he will make t a name at the stud. 1
