DEEPLY SHOCKED
AMERICA & THE GERMAN POGROM STATEMENT BY PRESIDENT NEWS ALMOST INCREDIBLE. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day, 12.5 p.m.) NEW YORK, November 15. President Roosevelt, in a statement, said: “The news of the past few days from Germany has deeply shocked public opinion in the United States. Such news from any part of the world would inevitably produce a similar profound reaction among the American people in every part of the nation. I myself could scarcely believe that such things could occur in a twentieth century civilisation. With a view to gaining a first-hand picture of the situation in Germany. I have asked the Secretary of State to order our Ambassador in Berlin to return immediately for report and consultation.” The President declined to elaborate' on the statement or his views, save to say that Mr Wilson’s return is not in the nature of a diplomatic recall and that the United States has not yet protested to Germany on behalf of Jews. He refused to indicate whether such a protest would be forthcoming.
