BOROUGH WORK

REPORTS FOR PAST MONTH. At last night’s meeting of the Masterton Borough Council the Borough Engineer, Mr C. R. Mabson, reported as follows:— Streets: Michael Street regrading is nearing completion and water main has been lowered and sewer manhole will be raised to pew level this week. Both flanks of Renall Street were tar sealed from Pownall Street to the railway and the northern side from the railway to Ngaumutawa Road. Archer Street path, west side between Bannister Street and Church Street, has been regraded and 8 new dished crossings were constructed. The formation of a new path on the east side in High Street from the old gravel pit to Solway Road is proceeding. The setting back of the fences of the Garrett Estate in Villa Street for street widening purposes is proceeding and will be completed early next week. The Waipoua River Diversion Scheme is proceeding satisfactorily. The Colombo Road Bridge concreting is nearing completion the handrails and pannels being cast this week. The construction of the swing bridge towers is proceeding and the channel excavation and eastern stopbank construction is approximately half way across the horse paddock. Building permits: During the month 13 permits were issued, having an estimated value of £5696 14s. For the corresponding month last year 14 permits were issued having an estimated value of £4112 15s. This month’s figures include 3 new dwellings, not counting State houses.

BOROUGH INSPECTOR’S REPORT. The Borough Inspector (Mr T. A. Russell) reported:—Notifiable infectious disease: Scarlet fever, one case; diphtheria, a suspected case was notified but on bacteriological examination proved negative. Milk supply: The usual milk samples were taken for general analysis, the milk proving of a good quality. Six supplying farms were inspected. Arrangements are at present being made for the annual T.B. testing of supplying herds. Traffic: Heavy traffic fees amounted to £4l 3s Id. Fifteen applicants for drivers’ licenses were examined, four failing to pass the test. GAS MANAGER’S REPORT. The Gas Engineer-Manager (Mr J. Douglas) reported as follows: —Gas manufactured: Total gas made corrected N.T.P. was 3,819,400 c.ft., being a decrease of 357,100 c.ft. or 8.5 per cent over the corresponding period of last year. Gas sold per meter shows a decrease of 15.2 pei’ cent. Government Inspector: The inspector visited the works on October 31. Calorific value of the gas was 452 B.T.U. and sulphuretted hydrogen was absent. General: The works are running very satisfactorily at the present time. The 3-inch main to serve the Government houses is just about completed and I expect to have it connected up some time this week.
