STOCK MARKET

SUPPLEMENTARY CATTLE FAIR. IMPROVED VALUES RECORDED. The N.Z. Loan & Mercantile Agency Co Ltd report having held a cattle fair yesterday when a large entry of station cattle came forward, to a fair attendance. Outside buyers operated freely and cleared a good portion of the yarding. Grown steers were in short supply and the few offered commanded a good sale at increased prices. Yearling steers also met a good sale but the large entry of heifers did not make quite up to last cattle fair rates, while empty cows sold particularly well. Fats remained at late rates. We had a total clearance at the following prices:—

Fat cattle: Light fat heifers £7 10s to £8 ss; fat cows £7 5s to £8; fat dairy cows £4. £4 10s.. £5 5s to £6. Steers: .2 and 3yr Hereford S.H. X steers a/c H. G. Groves £lO, 2yr do £8 7s; a/c R. E. Graham £7 Is to £7 12s; a/c E. H. Scholfield £7 3s; yearlingsteers a/c H. G. Groves £6 2s; a/c J. H. Percy £4 15s: others £5, £5 5s to £5 15s.

DALGETY & CO., LTD. Messrs Dalgety & Co., Ltd., report on their third Masterton spring cattle fair as follows:—A full yarding of all classes of station cattle again came forwaid and met with a spirited sale, there being a large and representative attendance of buyers, the Manawatu in particular being well represented. The store cattle yarded were not quite of the quality of those yarded at our' previous fairs, and the yarding of grown bulls and 2-year-old steers was limited, with the result that competition for these was keen and prices showed an increase of anything from 10s to 15s per head for this class of cattle. Yearling steers also showed a good increase. There was a big entry of female cattle, and they also maintained and in some cases exceeded prices at late sales. Fat cattle made values in excess of those ruling at our last fair and those of late paddock sales, but this can be accounted for in the quality of the beef yarded, in cur yarding in particular, a line of 45 prime fat cows and heifers was yarded on account of Mr O. A. Bunny, “Waipipi,” which in our opinion was one of the best lines of fat cows and heifers yarded this season. They attracted a lot of competition and topped the market for the day. P.A. cows £8 15s to £9 4s, and the horned Hereford cows £8 2s to £9, the line of 45 making the satisfactory average of just undei’ £9. Our entry of bullocks was topped with a forward P.A. pen on account of Mr S. Dalgliesh, Longbush, which fell to the bid of £lO 17s, and in the 2-year olds an attractive line of P.A. steers on account of Mr C. H. McKenzie, “Hillend,” made £8 10s. In the female section any cows or heifers showing quality were keenly sought after, 2-year heifers making from £5 to £6 according to quality, and forward conditioned cows making from £5 10s to £6 6s, the latter price being obtained for a pen of forward P.A.* cows offered on account of the Bennett Estate, “Fernglen,” this being the top price for that class of cattle at the sale. We report a total clearance at prices which must be considered very satisfactory:—Fat P.A. cows a/c O. A. Bunny, £8 15s to £9 4s; fat P.A. heifers, a/c O. A. Bunny, £8 19s; fat Hereford cows, a/c O. A. Bunny, £8 2s to £9; fat P.A heifers a/c A. Caselberg, £9; fat P.A. cows a/c “Kumu Kumu,” £8 2s; do, a/c “Fernglen,” £7 16s; P.A. bullocks a/c S. Dalgliesh, £lO 16s; 2-year P.A. steers a/c C. H. McKenzie, £8 10s; do, a/c J. M. Laing, £7 15s; other medium lines, £7, £7 6s to £7 10s; yearling P.A. steers, a/c I. D. P.A. cows with P.A. calves at foot, a/c Est. W. L. Wrigley, £6 ss.

Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co Ltd, report as follows:—A heavy yarding of cattle, well in excess to advertised numbers, came' forward at our third cattle fair of the season held in Masterton yesterday. There was a large attendance, and outside districts were strongly represented. The first cattle sale of the season was a particularly good one, but the second fair showed a decided easing tendency, while yesterday’s sale commanded good values again, comparable with the first sale, and for certain classes of cattle even better values were obtained. The welcome rains recently experienced was certainly a big factor in hardening yesterday’s market. The sale went with a swing throughout and there was no restraint in the trading. Very few bullocks were yarded and only a moderate number of younger steers came forward, the bulk of the offering being female cattle. The few bullocks offered were in very keen demand and steers also sold well. Two year heifers, of which a big number were offered, sold better than expectations while yearling heifers were also in demand. We sold a very nice pen of 2yr heifers, on behalf of Mr George McKay, Burnside, which realised £6 Is, yearling steers on behalf of the same vendor made £6 3s; Russell Bayliss easily topped the market for yearling heifers with £5 2s, for a particularly good lot. West Coast buyers bid confidently on store cows and kept the market up to a high level, while cows with calves at foot sold well. The “Abbotsford” P.A. cows, with calves' at foot, were an outstanding lot and made £8 9s. Fat cattle were firm, butchers forcing competition to fulfil requirements. Of our total offering of over 600 head, only one pen was unsold. The following are realisations: — A/c D. Donald, fat cows, £7 11s, 2yr heifers £6 ss; a/c P. McLachlan, fat 2yr steers £lO 10s, fat heifers £7 2s, fat cows £7 12s; a/c Foreman Bros, Te Wharau, yearling steers £5 14s to £5 6s, fat cows £6 10s to £7 Is; a/c P. Nathan, fat cows £9, £7 4; a/c N. FARMERS’ DISTRIBUTING CO. The N.Z. Farmers’ Co-op Distributing Co Ltd yarded and sold 860 head of cattle, an unusually large percentage of the penning being female cattle. Manawatu and Wanganui buyers were the chief operators, but the local grazing demand was also considerable, and a total clearance was effected at prices that showed an all round improvement on those ruling at the October fairs. Grown steers were keenly competed for and in this section of our entry Mr H. H. Mawley, of Bagshot, obtained £lO 6s for a line of 30 very forward three year olds, while a choice draft of 40 two year olds from Mamaku topped the market at £9. Yearling P.A. steers sold on account of Mr W. H. French, of Beauley, bought £6 8s and a line of Hereford yearling steers on account of Mr Geo Foreman, of Longbush, realised £6 4s. An attractive draft of 40 two year old P.A. heifers on account of Mr H. H. Mawley, of Bagshot, brought £6 Is and another outstanding line of 53 on account of Messrs D. H. Speedy and Sons, of Flag Creek, realised £5 16s. In the yearling heifer division a line of 53 on account of Messrs D. H. Speedy and Sons realised £3 10s.
