MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. PROTECTING BUSINESS FIRMS. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Mayor, Mr C. W. Skill, presided at the monthly meeting of the Martinborough Borough Council, held last night, Others present were:— Councillors M. N. Hardie, J. Mulvaney, G. P. Cotter, T. A. Hamilton, C. R. Holmes, D. J. Green, P. R. Plummer and W. H. Corfield. An apology for absence was received from Councillor W. F. Gundrie.
“We have got to protect our local business firms, who in the past have suffered badly at the hands of these people,” said Councillor Hardie, when moving that the licence fee for itinerant traders be increased from £5 to £25.
An amendment that the fee be raised to £lO was defeated by 5 votes to 4 and the motion was carried. “That ought to keep them out,” remarked Councillor Holmes, who added that the local firms had never had protection before.
It was decided to make a donation of £1 to the Children’s Health Camps Fund in lieu of purchasing health stamps. The caretaker of the Memorial Square, Mr A. Webber, tendered his resignation as from the end of the present month. The Wellington Education Board wrote stating that as yet no reply had been received from the Education Department regarding representations made for plans and specifications and a grant towards the cost of constructing swimming baths at the Martinborough District High School. The Town Clerk, Mr G. C. Willis, said that although he had heard nothing officially he understood that the tender of a Masterton firm had been accepted for the erection of State houses in Martinborough. ,
