SPORTS QUEEN
WAIRARAPA CARNIVAL. MEETING OF COMMITTEE. In connection with the Wairarapa combined sports queen carnival a meeting was held last night in the Y.M.C.A. to discuss matters. Mr J. Watson presided in the unavoidable absence of the Mayor (Mr T. Jordan). Mr B. Roberts, M.P., was present at the meeting. The following sports associations were represented:—Cricket, football, hockey, tennis, athletics, swimming, basketball, bowling. It was decided to adjourn the meeting until Monday, November 28, at 7.30 p.m. in the Y.M.C.A., so as to give the various sports bodies an opportunity to confer with the affiliated clubs controlled by them. It was decided to invite individual clubs not affiliated to any association, who wish to participate not only in the carnival, but also in the benefits to be distributed, to send delegates to our next meeting. This was done so as to enable small clubs, many of them in the country areas, who today find themselves unable to carry on owing to lack of funds, to become financial, and also with a view to encourage the formation of new clubs especially in the country.
The objects of the Wairarapa combined sports fyueen carnival is to raise funds necessary to put all the various sports associations on a financial footing. enabling them to compete by way of sending teams to other centres, and also for the purpose of acquiring new grounds, and improving those already used for sports and athletic purposes, and to acquire such plant that may be required for this purpose; generally, to foster goodwill and friendship among all members and supporters of all sports bodies, and also to encourage and strive to get all children to become interested in sports of various descriptions, so as to improve their health and well-being, and thereby create a healthy unit and body. An executive has been set up as follows:—Messrs T. Jordan (Mayor of Masterton), chairman; Mr D. T. Herbert, treasurer; Messrs J. Robertson. M.P., B. Roberts, M.P.. 1 representative of each sports body, 2 members representing the country districts, and 2 trustees to be elected by the executive. Mr F. Toft is organiser for the committee.
