AMATEUR ATHLETICS
BOOT TO APPEAR IN MASTERTON Pat Boot, the Empire Games halfmile title-holder, who is appearing at the Masterton Park Oval tomorrow evening at 6.30 p.m. in a 660 yards Invitation Handicap, is trying out the grass tracks in New Zealand with the idea of finding the most suitable for record-breaking attempts later in the season. It will be interesting to hear what he thinks of the local track on which Randolph Rose beat the American, Lloyd Hahn, over a mile in 4min 13 2-ssec, eight or nine years ago. Boot’s appearance here is attracting a great deal of interest and should give a great fillip to the sport in Masterton.
The best of the middle-distance runners in the Wairarapa have been asked to participate in the race, and although Boot will be conceding them generous handicaps an exciting contest is antipa ted. Supporting events are being staged to provide entertainment for those who arrive at the Oval before the starting time for the main event.
