INTERSCHOOL SPORTS
GATHERING AT WELLINGTON. FOUR NEW RECORDS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The McEvedy Shield was won by Wellington College for the eleventh time at the intercollege sports conducted by the Wellington Secondary Schools Athletic Association at the Basin Reserve on Saturday. In spite of the soft track after the rain, the standard of performance was as high as that of previous years, and in the intermediate and junior grades it appeared to be higher. Four records were broken, and one equalled, and in some other events only 1-5 second separated the winners’ times from the records. Ten schools were represented among the competitors, the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College participating tor the first time. The three grades were:—Junior, under 15; intermediate, under 161; senior, under 19 on October 1.
The new records were made as follows: Junior broad jump: N. Hastings, St. Patrick’s College, 18ft. lOJin. (previous record, 18ft. s{in.). Intermediate high jump: W. Hocquard, St. Patrick s College, sft. 51-in. (sft. s£in.). Senior shot put: J. McLoughlin, Silverstream College, 39ft. (37ft. Win). 440yds. intermediate: P. G. Morris, Wellington College, 54 l-ssecs. (54 2-ssecs.). H. Bretell, Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, equalled the 220 yards junior record of 25 l-ssecs. There were other good individual and team performances, and in general the knowledge shown by the boys of modern athletic styles indicated that good work is being done in the schools by the Wellington centre’s coach, Mr A L. Fitch. Bretell, a promising junior, won the 100, 220 and 440 yards in his grade. In the intermediate grade H. Potter won both the sprints in fast time. A. M. Gardiner’s time for the half-mile was only 2-ssecs. outside the record time, and the Wellington College relay team won in only l-ssecs. slower than the record. The best of the senior events was the mile,, in which R. Dockery, Rongotai, came with a final burst to snatch victory from Gardiner, Wellington College, and Rex Daniell, Wairarapa, who were separated by inches only. The championship points for the three grades were as under: —Wellington College, 41; Silverstream, 39; St. Patrick’s College. 19; Rongotai College, 18; Hutt Valley High School, 18; Wairarapa College, 12; Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, 9; Wellington Technical College, 4; Scots College, 2.
