RECORD OF DEFAULTER

(By

“The Cynic.”)

Up to Saturday Defaulter has scored 12 wins and a second. Mr H. D. Greenwood purchased him for 165gns but did not secure possession without some confusion. The auctioneer called a higher bid, but this was repudiated by Mr M. Steinberg, of Auckland, and Mr Greenwood stood to his call and became the fortunate buyer. Broke Down. Boomerang broke down during the running of the New Zealand Cup and he has been returned to Trentham. Wore a Special Bit When Gay Chou won the Criterion Handicap on Monday he was wearing a special bit, and his connections were not themselves too confident about his prospects, though the public backed him down to second favourite. New Zealand Cup Winner. By his earnings in the New Zealand Cup, Arctic King brought his winnings up to £5621, and a gold cup valued at £75. He has had a busy career since he began racing with two unplaced performances’ as a two-year-old, and has now contested 84 races for 20 wins, 10 seconds and eight thirds. His busiest season was when he was a four-year-01d—22 starts. He was eighteenth on the winning list for New Zealand last season. Some of his best efforts have been produced when the ground has been easy, and his trainer has acted wisely in not over-racing him when the ground has been firm. Promising Jumper. Dividend, who opened a winning account in the Brush Hurdles at Riccarton, is one of the most promising jumpers in the novice class. He has it in his favour that he is related (through his dam, Divinette) to Charlatan and Punchestown, and, being by Lord Warden, he has the substance desirable for the hurdling business. At Elderslie Stud. Mr C. E. Draper has sent his New Zealand Cup winner, Cerne Abbas, to Elderslie, to be mated this season with Solicitor-General. The mating is an interesting one, for it supplies a double cross of Carbine and Marco, and also

the very successful inbreeding to Pilgrimage, which has done such a lot of good for Lord Derby’s stud in England. The Elderslie' Stud property is to be handed over to the new owner, Mr E. Steele, now living at Windsor Park, Oamaru, next February, and a new Company to carry on the stud on up-to-date lines is now in process of formation. Spoiled Favourite’s Chance. Though the Riverton-trained 'two-year-old, Dark Flight, just failed to finish in a place in the Spring Nursery Handicap, the fast pace he set over the first half-mile settled the favourite’s (Daniel Defoe) chance. The latter had nothing left in reserve when challenged over the last half-furlong by Baran, a nicely-made colt by Bulandshar from Clemency. Her Debut over Hurdles. Linguist was having her first race over hurdles when she started in the Port Cooper Brush Hurdle Race on Wednesday, and, coupled with Redolent, made a good second favourite. A faulty jump at the second hurdle spoiled her chance. After this good showing on the first day, Redolent’s form in 'this race was very disappointing. New Zealand Cup History. The New Zealand Cup was founded by the Canterbury Jockey Club in 1883, and the last race was the fiftysixth in its history. Up to the present North Island owners head the list with 29 wins and two dead-heats; those of the South Island have had 25 wins and two dead-heats. Following is the full lost: —North Island. Tirailleur, St Hippo, Rosevelt, Impulse, Waiuku, Tirant D’eau, Seahorse, Ideal (dead-heater), Tortulla, Halberdier, Star Rose, ’Frisco, Downfall, Lady Lucy, Bridge, Midnight Sun, Sinapis Indigo (dead-heat-er), Tangihou, Menelaus, Sasanof, Vagabond, Oratress, Scion, Rouen, Sunart, The Banker, Oratrix, Cuddle, Fersen, Arctic King. South Island; Tasman, Vanguard, Fusillade, Spade Guinea, Lochiel, Manton, Wolverine, British Lion, Euroclydon, Lady Zetland, Fulmen (dead-heater), Canteen, Grand Rapids, Noctuiform, Vice Admiral, Warstep (dead-heater), Ardenvohr, Royal Star, Count Cavour, Rapier, Chide, Nightmarch, Fast Passage, Spearful, Palantua, Fast Passae, Spearful, Palantua, Steeton, Cerne Abbas.

A Promising Sprinter. Synthetic, winner of the Ashley Handicap, is a promising sprinter by Paper Money. He did not jump out With the leaders, and was about sixth when the course proper was reached, but over the last two furlongs finished very strongly to beat another of Paper Mohey’s progeny in Asset, who also came from well back in the early stages of the race.

Equals Hewitt's Record. Peerless success in the New Zealand Oaks gave A. E. Ellis his fourth winning ride in the fillies’ classic. His previous winning rides were on Kovokio (1931), Sweet Agnes (1933), and Lady Graceful (1935). L. H. Hewitt also rode four winners of this race, and F. E. Jones, B. H. Morris, and M. McCarten have each ridden three winners. RICCARTON CARNIVAL C.J.C. FINAL DAY. METROPOLITAN WON BY PADISHAH. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, November 12.
