SAINT GENES

PATRON OF STENOGRAPHERS. Stenographers in France have a patron saint. He is Saint Genes, borni at Arles at the* end of the third century. Honouring this saint, .there is a tablet in Arles put there by the stenographers of France. Near the place where the saint suffered martyrdom a chapel has been erected, and every year on August 28 a service is held attended by large numbers of stenographers from' all parts of France. Saint Genes was a notary, and he also took down the speeches, word for word, delivered in the forum of Arles, where there are some of the finest Roman remains in France, the principal being a theatre and an arena, still in use today.
