BETTER SCORING
IN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP SECOND ROUND RESULTS. SENSATIONAL CRASH OF TITLEHOLDER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, November 11. Better scoring was seen in the second round of the New Zealand open golf championship on the Balmacewen links today. About an hour after play had started the wind veered round to the south and drizzling rain, which caused fairways and greens to be on the holding side, set in. . With a brilliant round of 71, after his 72 on Thursday, B. J. Smith. Junr., the Invercargill professional led at the end of the second round with an aggregate of 113. Out in 38, with a 6 at the 472 yards fifth, Smith did a brilliant home journe' of 33 with birdies at the eleventh, th' - teenth and fourteenth and an eaglethree at the home hole (417 yards). The greatest sensation in today’s play was the crash of the holder of the open title, J. P. Hornabrook, Masterton, who could not hit a shot and took 86 for the round. He remarked afterwards that he was afraid that some of his drives were going to come back and hit him. It was pathetic to see such an able player so hopelessly off his game. It is still raining tonight, and weather prospects for tomorrow, when the final two rounds of the open will be played, are not piomising. The scores are as follow: —"B. J. Smith, Junr. TODAY’S PLAY THIRD ROUND RESULTS. HORNABROOK’S SCORE 79. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, This Day. The following are the scores in the third round of the championships. An early start was made on the Balmacewan links this morning when the open golf championship of New Zealand entered its final day. When Hornabrook and Mclntosh drove off at 7.45 o’clock the sky had cleared up and the sun was shining. The course was playing kindly, and although the greens could not be cut on account of the overnight rain they were all that could be desired. Public interest showed itself in the large galleries which followed every stroke with rapt attention. Locke and Silk attracted several hundred onlookers and as they proceeded others joined the throng until it resembled a miniature army engaged in field tactics. A breathless hush fell and every stroke was followed invariably by murmurs of approval. The first twenty players comprise ten amateurs and it is likely that one of these will annex the Bledisloe Cup for the best four rounds in the open. The Jellicoe Cup is awarded for the best single round and the Myers Cup for the best aggregate in the net scores today. B. J. Smith, jun, the Invercargill amateur, who heads the .field on the preliminary rounds, won the Gibson Cup for the best aggregate gross score. The following are the third round scores:—
