A portrait of Mr John Anderson, Mayor of Christchurch in 1869. offered to the city by his grandson. Mr John Anderson, of Dunedin, was accepted by the Christchurch City Council. In offering the portrait, Mr Anderson said that his grandfather, who died in 1896. arrived in the First Four Ships. In 1875, on the eve of his departure to Scotland, the citizens of Christchurch tendered him a banquet at which they asked him, through the Superintendent of the province, Mr William Rolleston, to have a portrait executed in England that would be a fitting memorial of the position he had occupied as one of the founders and settlers of the province. As the money for the picture was subscribed for by the citizens of ttrat day, it was hoped that the offer would be acceptable to the council.
