PROTECTION OF BRITISH INTERESTS KEEPING THE RIVER OPEN TO SHIPPING. STATEMENT IN COMMONS. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, November 10. Sir J. S. Wardlaw-Milne (Conservative) asked whether the Prime Minister was aware of the great import ance of maintaining British interests in shipping on the Yangtse River, and the necessity of the trade of the river being open to British tonnage . The Under-Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Mr R. A. Butler, in a writte”) reply, said: "Yes, and appropriate representations have been and will con tinue to be made to the Japanese Government.”
In answer to another question Mr Butler said lhat the importance which the British Government attached to the maintenance of the integrity of the Chinese Customs had been made clear.
