PINNED UNDER CAR

YOUNG MAN DROWNED. PLUNGE INTO RIVER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, November 11. A fatal accident occurred at Pigroot bridge, about 29 miles from Palmerston, at about 8.45 this morning, Alan Trevor Spinks, aged 21, of Waterloo Street, Dunedin, losing his life when the car which he was driving got out of control on the downhill grade. Spinks was thrown out of the car, but was pinned down by it in the Shag River. His two companions, Charles Frederick Algie and Mervin James McKenzie, both of Dunedin, were uninjured. The car, a Ford VB, was coming to Dunedin from the public works camp at Makarora, and was running down the grade when it apparently got out of control when approaching the bend, and plunged over the bank about 25ft. into the river. The driver, Spinks, was apparently thrown out of the . car, but when it somersaulted down the incline, he was pinned under it in the river. The two passengers were unable to release him and, by the time further aid could be obtained from a passing car, it was too late.
