Never Knows Defeat.
Arctic King is never beaten—especially when the sting is out of the going—and the angular, unprepossessing little gelding never showed up his gameness to a greater extent than he did on Saturday when he wore down The Buzzer with a wonderfully sustained run from the foot of the straight. The horses for courses rule certainly worked out well with the Trentham-owned-and-trained gelding, for he won the Islington and Great Autumn Handicaps there last season. This in-bred son of Rabbi and Snowland has now had 84 starts for 20 wins, 10 seconds and nine thirds, and his stakes winnings now amount £5,815. And he is by no means a spent light yet. Mixed Luck. After riding a brilliant finish to land Arctic King home a winner in the New Zealand Cup, the Trentham horseman, Stewart Wilson, broke a collarbone when Rakahanga fell during the running of the Steward’s Handicap later in the afternoon. Wilson will thus be put out of action for a few weeks, but he is reported to have been lucky to have escaped more serious injuries. Corroboree Unlucky. It was very encouraging to note the dash Corroboree put in over the final stages of his race at the Rangitikei meeting, and it would appear as if this big Lord Quex gelding will prove a good winner for the Wilson menage as the season progresses. Corroboree possesses stamina and he appeals as a likely sort for some of the country cup events later on.
