TOWNSWOMEN’ GUILD
BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION. A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. The Y.M.C.A. hall was filled to capacity yesterday afternoon, the occasion being the celebration of the third birthday of the Masterton Townswomen’s Guild.
The beautiful floral decorations, the work of the members of the Gardening Circle, were much admired by all. Mrs W. H. Judd presided, and extended a' warm welcome to all present, especially to the representatives of various Women’s Institutes, and spoke of the happy fellowship that exists between the two sister organisations. Regret was expressed at the absence of the foundation member of the Guild, Mrs J. Walker, owing to recent bereavement, members standing in silence aS a mark of sympathy with her in the death of her husband.
Birthday greetings were conveyed to the Guild by representatives of the following Women’s Institutes: Carterton, Gladstone, Mauriceville, Kopuaranga, Kaituna-Fernrdige, Opaki, Tinui, Upper Plain, and also the Wairarapa Federation of Women’s Institues. These representatives were each presented with shoulder sprays. Mrs W. H. Judd received a beautiful bouquet from the Guild members. The three candles on the handsome birthday cake were then lighted by Mrs E. J. Burke and extinguished by Mrs Scharnweber.
The cake was cut by Mrs P. R. Welch who had assisted with the organising of the Guild three years ago. Mrs Welch spoke of the wonderful progress that had been made by the Guild, and expressed the hope,that it would continue to flourish.
The top tier of the cake was won by Mrs Gray, and the lucky number competition by Mrs Parsonson.
Afternoon tea Was served by the committee and helpers. A fine collection of articles was exhibited by members of the Arts and Crafts Circle.
During the afternoon, the following programme was rendered: Quartette,“I Know A Lovely Garden,” Mesdames Taylor, Scrivener, Jones and Pearce; Garden Scene, “The Glory of the Garden,” members of Gardening Circle; Duets, “Turn Ye To Me,” and “The Huntsman’s Chorus,” Mrs E. J. Burke and Miss D. O’Donnell; Part Songs, “Oh, Who Will O’er The Downs So Free,” and “Hush Thee My Baby,”' The Singing Circle.
The final item was a most amusing one-act play, “Mr Sampson,” by members of the Drama Circle, those taking part being Mesdames Dagg, Downes, and Jones.
The singing of the Guild \Ode con eluded a very happy function.
