GROWING TRAFFIC

TELEGRAPH AND TELEPHONE COMMUNICATION. FURTHER MECHANISATION. New Zealand is on the eve of an important development in telegraphic communication —the adoption of the multi-channel voice-frequency system. The innovation will not be evident to the public except in the indirect form of greatly-improved facilities for communication, but inside the Post Office a revolutionary step is being taken in the further mechanisation of the telegraph service.

Multi-channel voice-frequency telegraphy is one of the most recent developments in communication engineering. It originated in Britain, where it was devised primarily for telegraphing over the great network of underground telephone cables. New Zealand's telegrams are rapidly approaching a volume of 500,000 messages a month, and the department has to look well ahead to provide for a steadilygrowing traffic. Long before the facilities have reached a point equal to the capacity of the system, the equipment is being prepared for further advance in traffic.
