I Cape Town, November 8. In the Marylebone Cricket Club’s first match of their South African tour, against Western Provinces, the visitors in the first innings scored 589 runs for the loss of 8 wickets (Paynter 193, Hammond 106, Valentine 69, Hutton 68, Verity, not out, 66, Ames 31, Fames, not out, 11, Wright 11, Bartlett 10, Edrich 9).

Hutton batted carefully but Paynter and Hammond were most aggressive. Paynter reached his century in 93 minutes, after which he hit at everything. He batted 154 minutes and hit five 6’s and eighteen 4’s. Hammond batted for 115 minutes, his score including four 6’s and seven 4 s. Valentine rattled up 50 runs in 35 minutes.
