PARIS SHOOTING

THE ATTACK ON DR. VON RATH

ANTICIPATION OF DEMANDS BY HITLER. STERN MEASURES AGAINST OPPONENTS. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. LONDON, November 8. The shooting and serious wounding of Dr von Rath, Secretary at the German Embassy, in Paris yesterday, by a Polish Jew, Herschel Grynszpan, is regarded as being most regrettable in view of the international situation. It is expected that Herr Hitler will demand that Grynszpan be handed over to Germany as the shooting was perpetrated on technically German territory. It is also expected that he will demand that sterner measures be taken against opponents of the J Nazi regime at present in France. The “Daily Telegraph’s” Berlin correspondent says that Herr Hitler has sent ■ his own medical attendant, Dr Brandt, also Professor Madnuss, to Paris by air to attend Dr von Rath. The Fuehrer also telephoned the Embassy inquiring the condition of Dr von Rath, who has undergone two operations for blood transfusion. Grynszpan was born in Hanover, and possessed a Polish passport issued in Paris.

"I am sorry I did not kill him,” he allegedly told the police. “I wished to avenge the Jewish people by killing some German. I did not care whom.”

A letter from Grynszpan’s parents, which was found dated October 31, read: “We are in a train approaching the Polish frontier. We were roughly expelled from Germany and have been left without a farthng. We do not know what we can do.” Grynszpan’s uncle and aunt have been arrested and charged with harbouring an alien. M. Bonnet. French Foreign Minister, has expressed regret to the German Ambassador.

FIRST REPRISALS DEMONSTRATIONS IN GERMAN TOWNS. JEWISH SHOPS & SYNAGOGUE ATTACKED. (Received This Day, 9.50 a.m.) BERLIN, November 8. The first reprisals for shooting of Dr. Von Rath have been announced. All Jewish cultural performances are banned until the end of the year. This will affect the activities of the Cultural League, wfilch was formed under Nazi auspices. Anti-Jewish demonstrations occurred at Cassel and Bebra. A mob at Cassel smashed the windows of Jewish shops, forced an entrance to a synagogue and destroyed furniture. Those in well-informed circles believe that the authorities are considering the expulsion of all foreign Jews. PRESS CHORUS. I DENUNCIATION OF “BOLSHEVIK JEWS.” (Independent Cable Service.) BERLIN, November 8. There is unanimity throughout the Press that "international Bolshevik Jews are behind the shooting of the German diplomat, Dr. von Rath, which is linked up with the shooting of Gustloff in Switzerland.”

The “Volkischer Boebachter,” the chief Nazi Party organ, declares that the shots not only mark a new German attitude toward Jews, but should also be the signal for other countries to recognize that international Jewry alone hinders understanding between nations.
