FIRE & EXPLOSIONS

JAPANESE SHIP DAMAGED IN SYDNEY HAZARDOUS WORK DONE BY FIREMEN By Te'.rgraph—Press Association— Copyright. SYDNEY, November 8. A sudden fire, accompanied by intermittent explosions, occurred in the Japanese freighter, Yae Maru, lying at Walsh Bay today. Six wharf labourers were driven from the hold by shafts of flame and suffocating fumes. Serious damage was caused to a cargo of Christmas merchandise, but the vessel suffered no structural damage. Firemen using smoke helmets had the fire under control in two hours, but their task was extremely hazardous owing to the presence in the hold of 200 drums of butylacetate shipped from America via Japan.
